Hey experts! I've been reading through a lot of the "is this lossy?"-posts, and the tips and tricks for detecting mp3 compression & such, and i've read about that before as well, and know a fair bit about it, but i lack the experience in detecting mp3s etc. So I would be glad if you could help me out a little.
OK, I have this show, and at first listen i suspected it being lossy, since it does indeed sound bad, and lossy. The one I traded it from had "AUD MD?" as the source, and he was unable to get contact with the guy he originally received the show from. So I had a look around, and found that it has probably at least been through a MD, quite possibly it was recorded onto one in the first place. There's a cutoff at 13 khz (or rather, it looks to me as if everything around 13 khz was abducted by aliens...), and in the SA you will see all those little blocks at the top, with "horns" :/
On the other hand: that tauanalyzer prog claims "MPEG" compression has been used (although i've read here that that prog isn't very reliable?)?
It seems to me only MD compression has been used, but what say you? Also, I tried compressing the wav to mp3 (160 kbps), and back to wav, which made the SA become a lot smoother (ie. the "horns" disappeared, and overall it looked more blurry), and in the FA there was even more loss around 13 khz, and above 17 khz...
Attached are some screenshots (FA & SA, one 2 sec) I hope will be enough to determine the compression used, or formulate a theory at least.
Thanks
