the re-encoding they're referring to is when you take a DVD thats in 4:3 [already encoded, aka compressed], and then cropped to 16:9, and encoded back to DVD...that is where the double encoding/compression occurs, which leads to a degradation in quality

doesn't make much of a difference as far as I am concerned. why would anyone CROP an image and loose image information???
'art' should be appreciated the way it was created and not in a butchered and mutilated way. imho the re-encoding issue just adds to it but is not the main evil here.
