The files would be MORE stable if burned as a data disc. You should never use the audio CD format for archving.

But there is no good reason not to use FLAC as your archive format. Perhaps jcrabb is worried about the extremely remote possibility that if your files exist only as flacs, someday you won't be able to decompress them back to wave. That is so unlikely that I wouldn't bother worrying about it.
