On the face of it a slightly contentious statement but as long as you're running OS X 10.3 or above there is no justification for not running
XLD, even if your drive is non-caching/has a very low cache value. Make sure "Automatically check for updates" in Preferences is checked or use the check for updates from the XLD drop down menu.

OS 9 and pre-OS X 10.3 users are out of luck and I'm not sure how 10.3 users will ensure that they're always using the latest updates but for all other Mac users, XLD is the nec plus ultra, cat's pyjamas, bee's knees and dog's dangly bits.
