Liberated Bootlegs

A member on my site asked this question -

I have three (Stones, Clapton, Morrissey) bootlegs that I purchased a while back (before I owned a computer even!) that I would like to vine. I'm sure they're bootlegs and the artists probably don't recognize them as official releases. However, they have "don't copy, distribute, etc." language on them and I don't want to break any vining ettiquette rules. Any tips or info here would be appreciated...thanks!

I was wondering what sort of feedback TDD as on this? I've never dealt with a LB this close to the source.

I realize this isn't so much techno stuff, but it is a question related to trading. So if it needs to be moved, that's fine.

A lot of bootlegs have fake legal jargon on them like "Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws" etc, but since the bootleggers don't hold the copyright and don't pay any of their revenue to the record label/artist it means nothing. The purpose of liberating a bootleg is to prevent people who aren't the artist or their label from making profit from the sale of the bootleg.

So what we normally do is check if the CD is for sale or if it was previously for sale (by the artist's record label) and is now out of print. If it has never been released commercially, we make it available for free.

As a friend of mine who's a recording artist told me recently, "I don't mind people taping and sharing my shows and such, but if anybody's going to make money from it it's going to be me!"

Yup...seed away. Anything that's silver > EAC is a great rip. As long as none of the material is available officially, it's fair game. All that stuff, like Five says, is just crap that bootleggers put on there to keep people paying high prices for stuff they can get for free.

In fact, come to think of it, that's the same thing Microsoft does, isn't it?

I sent this info on to the individual and also expressed the need to follow the guidelines at the coaster, flac frontend, ffp, text file, and a md5 file. I didn't stress using shntool for the md5. I know it is prefered, but just like we did, sometimes I think it's best to make babysteps when starting. I mentioned shntool, and said that would make a complete package that any trader would be looking for.

BTW the clapton boot is called "The Circus Has Left Town", he couldn't remember the names of the other two.

Well, you can avoid the shntool md5 thing by just encouraging him to use FLAC and ffp. The format is superior, and the ffp thing is a lot easier to use.
