im thinking of starting a tracker for some underground bands. phpbb is free and also has mods for trackers. im wondering if the phpbb tracker would be able to handle the traffic and if the speeds will be fast. I already have a webhost which offers unlimited space and bandwidth but does that play a factor when dealing with trackers?

there is also vbulletin which this site runs, however this site has lot of torrents compared to a site dedicated to just one band. so would you recommend phpbb or vb. Is vb fast, or does the speed depend on your webhost? (ex godaddy).

just wondering cause if its free it just sounds too good to be true

I don't know that you are going to get much response to that question here. Most people here just use the site and have no idea what software is running it. You may find that the tracker used for the phpbb mod is the same one being used for the vbulletin mod you are looking at. The tracker is just the backend and it doesn't care what type of forum software you are running. The mod just writes the code for the interface between the two.

I can't really comment to much since I have never run a phpbb site and really don't know what is available there.

im thinking of starting a tracker for some underground bands...(does it) depend on your webhost? (ex godaddy). you would need a dedicated or virtual (VPS) host plan.
a traditional shared hosting plan would not give you full root access to properly install/run a tracker.

p.s. nice username

You get what you pay for remember that.
phpBB is garbage plain and simple.
Go with vbulletin then hit up toolmanwill at http://vbitty.com/
If your in need of hosting, I have my own server and we host a number if LEGAL torrent sites.

I have looked into this ( after phpbb 3 came out and some mods were released to integrate some tracker functions) and determined that the phpbb / tracker solution available might be ok for a small amount of activity.

If it was apples to apples, vB would win, hands down - but phpbb is free and, though I didn;t ever set it up, it sure seemed like it would be worth a try for low traffic tracker use before paying for and setting up vB.

James, aren't you guys upgrading? Are you going to vB4 forums (or suite)?

we'd discussed it... don't want to spend the cash.

like I said, there's no contest between the two, but phpbb is free and works fine for smaller sites.
