avi to dvd?

I am not so informed about viewing video files... Is it possible to take a fileset that has .avi and play on a standard dvd player? Do I have to convert? Please let me know if there are other options (besides playing the the avi on my computer).

No, you don't need to convert your files. Most standalone dvd players have no problem with avi.

if the DVD player has the DivX logo printed on it, then it can play most .avi.
the more modern the player, the more up to date the codec inside will be, and so you'll find that most .avi files will play.
there are some ridiculously cheap machines around now that play DVD/DivX, it's amazing.
and it's great to be able to get 5 or 6 films on one DVD.

If you have a data disc with an .avi file on it, a standard DVD Player will not recognize it, unless your player is a DIVX player.

Otherwise your SOL with that.

There are programs that allow you to convert an avi file to dvd format and will then burn to a disc in a format that allows the standard dvd player (or PS3) to recognize it when you put the disc in.

That's not true. If he has a dvd player that is NOT Divx, then it won't recognize the disc, as the .avi would be on a DATA disc. At least that's what it seems like the OP is referring to.

I found that my dvd player won't play divx. And, the nero prog that came with the LG burner cannot handle avi (nero 7 essentials). Maybe there is freeware to do the conversion? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Under Nero, in the DVD options, there should be something there like "Make your own DVD VIDEO" that allows you to do that.

You can try Super (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Encoders-Converter-DIVX-Related/SUPER.shtml), but my advice is to buy a cheap video player. I think you can find one for 30$.

You really only have two choices:


Buy a Philips DVD player from Amazon (http://bit.ly/cuQURL) or your local Walmart, that can play Divx (MPEG-4 codec AVI). These run about $50 are are great machines. I don't really suggest other brands for Divx/Xvid playback.
Buy ConvertXToDVD (http://bit.ly/bdNyfd) and make yourself true DVD-Video discs to play in a DVD player. Also about $50. Again, there are some other options -- some pay, some free -- but I don't really suggest them for the best quality output (or the as being easy to use).

Others mentioned both of these options briefly, but I wanted to give you some more details.
