PQDVD is not free, so I have not answered your question... but it is cheap and it is the best for this task. It'll do anything you want for getting video on to portable players. :thumbsup

avidemux perhaps. Haven't used it yet but it seems like a powerful versatile FREE tool http://www.avidemux.org
