I just converted a 48K download to 44.1K for CD burning purposes. So, when one converts the invidual .wav files to 44.1k, this causes sbe - correct????

That is what I thought! Certainly the best way to correct would be to use shntool or TLH, but if one converts the .wav files to flac will this also align the SB????

All will fix it. It's probably best to fix them before compression.

Because uncompressed they will require two CD-R to archive. If not, I would keep them as is

My point was why not keep the 48K files and delete the 44.1 files after you burn your audio CD?

If you are going to archive the 44.1 files and throw away the 48K ones you might as well just convert them to a high quality lossy format and toss the wave files completely.

48k files shouldn't be that much larger than 44.1 unless they also happen to be 24 bit files. If they are 24 bit files then I would definitely keep them. Tossing them in favor of 44.1/16 files is a waste.

What's the point in archiving the 44.1 files at all if you have an audio CD of them? By the time your CD dies on you and you want to burn another one you'll really wish you had kept the 48K (24bit?) files since they will eventually be the standard.

I'd still archive the 48k files even if they are only 16 bit. They won't be much bigger than 44.1 files, and they are the originals that you downloaded (or wherever you got them). The 44.1 versions are necessary for burning an audio CD but they are lossy in the sense that some of the original data was lost during downsampling.

At this stage in the evolution of audio trading people need to start archiving 48k sources whenever they get them, especially if they are 24 bit, but even if they are not. That fits the spirit of lossless trading, and prepares you for the future when the audio CD format will be dead.
