Hi folks,
Just wanted to let you know that the hosting service took our servers offline without warning as of today, about 12:30 pm CET.
They seem to have received another nice letter from the lawyer(s).
Erwe is currently looking into the matter and tries to get hold of someone from the management. He'll request that the servers will be taken online asap. Might be a bit difficult, as tomorrow is a bank holiday here.
We'll do our best to settle the matter asap and hope to be up and running soon.
Take care!

I'm starting to think these letters are a joke being played by someone. A really stupid joke. It's common knowledge now that anyone can send an official-looking letter to a host and the host will get scared and do what they say no matter what...

Dimeadozen is indeed down for now; I just tried to get on this morning, and could not; after remembering what happened with the previous EZT and the rush to go elsewhere from many of us suddenly shut out, I made an effort to join here asap; I meant to do so even after the crisis abated, but nevertheless I am glad to get on here and hope things continue to run smoothly for all here.

If it weren't for EZT/DIME, I know there's quite a few artists I'd have next to nothing of: Porcupine Tree, Pavement/Stephen Malkmus, Super Furry Animals, The Verve, and many others.

I just wonder if Marty is as miserable a person IRL as he is here?????
Quality qual·i·ty
1. An inherent or distinguishing characteristic; a property.
(distinguishing characteristic??? full of venom (or himself) in Marty's case)
2. A personal trait, especially a character trait: “The most vital quality a soldier can possess is self-confidence” (George S. Patton).
(character????? HAHAHAHA!)
3. Essential character; nature: “The quality of mercy is not strain'd” (Shakespeare).
(somehow I just can't bring myself to mention "his name" right after Shakespeare)
4. Superiority of kind: an intellect of unquestioned quality.
(superiority in his mind)
5. in the New Funk N Wagnels QUALITY is defined as only Marty has Pink Floyd that deserves to be shared. The rest of us better not dare.

Quality: something special about an object or person
Can you rock a party without rehearsing?
I can, anytime, on the spot rhyme
Many recording artists can't do it, but I'm
More than just a recording artist kicking dust
I'm a sandstorm, taking human form
K plus R S equals one
I don't burn anymore, I just cook 'till you're done
And when you're done, then I serve
Like alphabet soup, letters, words
Sentences, chunks of meat into a paragraph
Get the meaning then ask the question 'bout the guy
Who first is down but then he lies
What he is to you, he's a part time sucker

Marty, I don't think that's being fair at all. I've seen some excellent shows put up there. I've also seen a lot of the users there start to post lineage and source info with their shows recently too. Sure, not all shows are quality, but I've seen a huge improvement over there in the last six or so months. I think the Mods have been trying real hard to improve the site and I think it shows.
As for the U2 part of this, I'm not sure exactly what to think. U2 is not anti-taping, however, I do know they are anti-IEMs and I know they can be a bit of perfectionists and so they aren't too crazy about filming. So, I would guess it's either the DVDs or the IEMs that are the culprits.

It's for that very reason that I have to wonder if their hosts have even received legitimate complaints, or if they're just bogus letters from someone out to get them.
I'm really starting to think there's someone out to get them.
Oh, who wants to do a version of the "owned" picture for EZT/DIME? I'd do it myself, but I can't think of a font that screams U2.

U2Preservation is not behind this. :lol Sure, they were disappointed that the DVD got released early, but then they just let it go. In fact, I then got permission to put it up here, which I did.
I do wonder about what is going on with the 'lawyers' and EZT/DIME though. Back in my STG days, we had something like this happen to us. Someone would put a commercial release up on our tracker, and then a couple hours later Gray would get a Notice from an attorney. This happened about three times in one month. It turns out that someone was pissed off and they were deliberately putting stuff on our tracker and then notifying the authorities just to get us in trouble. I never saw any of these notices since Gray never shared them, but it did happen several times between May and July.

I do wonder about what is going on with the 'lawyers' and EZT/DIME though.
Quite a long story... there is a lawyer office in Hamburg. For about two years now, they are searching through the web for copyright violations and send out letters (they are acting on behalf of a company in Berlin, which got its authorization through IFPI Germany). Usually, those letters are directed to the website owners. For reasons we don't know, yet, they are now getting at our hosting service. Not just because of EZT/DIME, but also because of other customers (the hosting service's lawyer said they'd be getting letters weekly now). One recent letter referred to a four year old post in a public forum which contained a link to an MP3 file hosted on servers of our hosting service. Four years! Most probably, the file is long gone history.
For all we know, the only thing this lawyer office is occupied with is writing such letters. Because the boss of the office is the same than one of the managers of the company in Berlin... there was a "nice" story about him in a magazine last year or so.
At the moment, we're in touch with the hosting service's lawyer and are trying to work out a solution.

Yep! I'm opening a torrent as we speak! :clap: :clap: :clap: :clap:
Me too!
I just get out of bed and start checking my sites out, first one being The Dylan Pool (The tour just finished and I came in 1487 out of 2232 while my team came in 176 out of 276) and the guys over there are freaking out about it. Since there's an exclusive Dylan torrent site (went up when EZT went down) they were all like "hey guys up your stuff there!" and not much more other than Dime is down.
So I quickly open a another window to see WTF. Sure enough, Dime comes up and looks good. Open another window, this one for here. Top thread is this one. Read through it. Get to the last post with no new word. So I though maybe I need to check deeper into Dime. And hey! The frist Dylan show I saw in Chicago has just been upped! Click on that sucker and start the d/l right away. All is good, with a decent d/l speed (I'm already at 10% done). So come back here to spread the good news, and you all beat me too it. I'm not complaining though. Since I missed out on the scary, this was actually a really good start to my day!

This is a list of quotes compiled by Chris Edge over at u2pres.......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"When Kelly told me about the bootlegs a few months ago, I wasn't sure that it would go," McGuinness says. "One worry was how enthusiastic the label would be to do it, but it would seem they've been cooperative. Three million total is a very significant result for Sony [Epic's parent company] as much as for the band. It just goes to show that if you make a good enough case, these giant corporations will do exactly what you want. It's been my experience they respond well to being infiltrated, and if you go to your corporation with a plan and it's a good one, very often you'll get total cooperation and have good results."
http://www.dallasobserver.com/issue...4-12/stuff.html
NIGHTINGALE: We've been asking people to ring in with some questions. This is an unusual one. Alan Ivory from Kent: "What do you think about bootleg tapes being sold?."
BONO: As long as people don't pay too much for them, we've no problem with bootlegs. What I have a problem with is people charging five quid for a record that's you know, inferior, or a live concert that's been done on a Walkman. They're just extorting people who are into music and into U2. So I really object to them, and I think that they should all have their toenails pulled out. But if they do them at reasonable prices, no problem.
MULLEN: I don't necessarily agree with Bono on this, because I think 99 per cent of it is rip-off merchants. The only system that works is when people tape things and swap them, no one has any objections to that. But when people start selling them on the street, I think it's always going to lead into extortion, and ripping people off.
SCOTT: Let's throw this over to Paul McGuinness, who's their manager. Do you actually go after the bootleggers?
McGUINNESS: Yes, if there are boatloads of them, yes. But I remember a few years ago when there was that stupid campaign that the record industry organised called "Home Taping is Killing Music". I remember thinking, "What a stupid thing to say. How could home taping kill music?. Home taping was spreading music, and I thought it was a good thing. Actually, let me qualify that a little. If there is some bastards in Taiwan who has got a boatload of couterfeit copies of Rattle and Hum, and he ships them to Europe, I hope it sinks….
http://classifieds.kingsoft-denmark.com/int1.htm
ADAM: "I think bootlegs are something that's very difficult to stop. There are fans out there that want to buy them. I don't like overpriced bootlegs that are ripping the fans off. If they're good quality recordings of a show then I'm happy enough that people have access to those things."
Tonster: Paul: what do you feel about boot legs
Paul: Well, I would distinguish between bootlegs and counterfeits. Counterfeits I take avery
dim view of because they're taking money from my clients' pockets. The bootleg
phenomenon I'm very relaxed about, quite honestly. I think everyone knows the difference
between an authorized recording we'd put out. The fact that people circulate and swap
recordings they've made at our concerts I'm actually very relaxed about even though the
industry is formally opposed to it. I do have a problem with the recordings produced in
Europe, particularly in Italy -- you can find a whole range of things that look like official U2
recordings in full color packaging -- they are extremely poor quality with a very high price tag
and I think there should be more legal protection against things like that. But in Italy the law
is inadequate to deal with that.
BONO ON BOOTLEGS:
"The only thing that can piss you off is if people are charging a lot of money for something that isn't very good. It [the Achtung Baby working tapes] got bootlegged in Berlin and it was just like having your notebook read out. That's the bit I didn't like about it. There were no undiscovered works of genius, unfortunately, it was more just gobbledy-gook..."
Note: Bono admits going out and buying a copy of that bootleg anyway!
Paul McGuiness (U2's manager) is asked:
What do you feel about bootlegs?
Paul says:
Well, I would distinguish between bootlegs and counterfeits. Counterfeit
albums, which are simply illegally produced reproductions of our records,
I obviously would take a very dim view of because they're taking money
from my clients' pockets.
The bootleg phenomenon, by which I presume you mean illegal live
recordings of the concerts - I'm very relaxed about that, quite honestly. I
think everyone knows the difference between an authorized live recording
that we would put out, for instance Under A Blood Red Sky or Rattle &
Hum - everyone kind of understands that that's a legitimate live recording.
The fact that people circulate and swap recordings they've made at our
concerts with tape recorders under their coats I'm actually very relaxed
about that. I know the industry is formally opposed to that kind of thing
but I'm not. I don't have a problem with it at all.
The other thing I do have a problem with are the recordings that are
produced in Europe in full color packaging, particularly in Italy, where
there's very inadequate copyright protection. In Italy, in any Italian record
store, you can find a whole range of things that look like official U2
recordings on CD with full color packaging and very often borrowing
from established U2 graphics and photography. They are usually of
extremely poor quality and they carry a very high price tag and I think
there should be more legal protection against things like that. But,
unfortunately, in Italy the law is utterly inadequate to deal with that.
Adam (U2's bassist) is asked:
How do you feel about bootlegs?
Adam says:
I think bootlegs are something that it's very difficult to stop. Obviously
there are fans out there that want to buy them. I don't like overpriced
bootlegs that are ripping the fans off. If they're good quality recordings of
a show then I'm happy enough that people have access to those things
and I know that there's a culture out there that listens to bootlegs. So I
kind of tolerate it, provided the quality is good and the fans aren't being ripped off.
Edge (U2's guitarist) is asked:
How do you feel about fans putting your copyrighted material on their webpages??
Edge says:
I don't have a problem with music being on the Internet, as long as
it's not resold because I don't believe that music on the Internet is bad for
music . . . I think it's OK for music. To me, it's a bit like when cassette
tapes were first made available, the music industry thought that blank
tapes would destroy the business because people would be at home
churning out copies for their friends. It never happened. I think music on
the Internet is going to work out as just another place for people to discover new things.
Edge is asked:
What do you think of bootlegs?
Edge says:
I have no problems with bootlegs. I think, again, if people make
recordings and give them to their friends - as long as people don't get ripped off.
The Edge on bootlegs: "I have no problems with bootlegs, I think, again, if people make recordings and give them to their friends - as long as people don't get ripped off."
Bono on bootlegs: "The only thing that can piss you off is if people are charging a lot of money for something that isn't very good. It [the Hansa Studios, Achtung Baby working tapes] got bootlegged in Berlin and it was just like having your notebook read out. That's the bit I didn't like about it. There were no undiscovered works of genius, unfortunately, it was more just gobbledy-gook..." Note: Bono admits going out and buying a copy of that bootleg anyway!
"Bootlegs are fine if you're making a few of them for your friends, I've no problem with that, but if it's big business, bad ass crime, I don't think you want to be a part of that -– and that's what this is. We're dealing with some nasty people and I don't think you should be paying for their summer holiday in Ibiza."
http://www.atu2.com/news/article.src?ID=3608
"People sharing our music, personally I have no problem with. It's when they're doing it as a business, I have a real problem with that." Bono, quoted in Contactmusic 12/23/2004
:clap: :clap: :clap: Great!!!! That is really good news! :lol :lol :lol
I only hope that this is the definite end of this crappy site that doesn't give shit about quality... :D :D :D
A little harsh. With around 100,000 users they've obviously brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people. Like so many others I got a truckload of great music off there that I'd never have otherwise had a chance of even hearing. I would hope that most people are into the music itself rather than the more arcane aspects of clandestine recording and tape trading.
Keeping the best possible quality is a laudable aim, but am I too cynical for thinking a large part of this hostility comes from your namesake on Easytree being shitcanned after getting abusive towards other users?
Why am I not surprised? A first post that bumps an old thread!? It can't be!
:lol
I've had issues with DIME in the past, but lately damn have I been picking up a lot of cool shows from there.
Dime is the best site for live music. It doesn't take me long to find something I want from there.
The absence of a few really major bands, all of which I like, is disappointing, but I agree, there is lots of great stuff there.
Yeah, their 'search' is pretty lame.
yeah, it searches for every word you put in sepperately, and you can't really do a genre search unless for whatever reason you trust the seeders on there...
And for some artists it's difficult to categorize them. I've seen 3 or 4 different categories for Bob Dylan. And I've found the search works best if I use " :) " around what I'm looking for. That said, it's still kind of a crap shoot. I seem to remember that the search function at STG was basically a randomizer, so at least it's an improvement over that.
BTW, I love Dime. :)
I did a little cosmetic work on my ratio... still not good, but I did upload over 600% on a Sex Pistols show recently...
