So i have some dual layer dvd's now but when i try to burn the vts file it sounds like its burning for a few minutes but then my burner ejects the disc and I get an error message. What gives?

Does it do this burning single layers DVDs also? There shouldn't be anything specific to DL that would make it do this.

i have burned single layer dvds before and never had this problem. I tried with Nero too and i get an error message too

Either the discs or your drive is dying. Make sure you close everything and reboot before trying to burn.

What is the model number of your burner. How old is it?

Its a Sony DRX-700UL. Its about 4 or 5 years old. I just burned a cd on it the other day

hmm... I thought it might not be DL but it is. Not sure. That is strange. Maybe try another brand of media. What brand are you using?

I tried ONES, Nero, and ImgBurn. I'm not sure if I used Nero right. Its the older version, Nero 6 that came with the burner. I need a refresher on Nero. With ImgBurn my burner just kept speeding up then slowing down, like it did when I used ONES but there is never any progress

thanks.

I just burned a single layer dvd, why wouldn't it let me burn a dual layer dvd then?

Sony drives are not the best, also discs. Check your burn with CDSpeed (http://www.cdspeed2000.com) (at 8x). I'd try also ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com) which is free and best imo for DL burning. Guide for DL is here (http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=4643). Use Verbatim DL discs.

What about the drive's firmware? If you've never upgraded it go to Sony's support site (http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/111#drivers) and download the latest firmware (VY08). Be warned: Upgrading the firmware may toast your drive, so do exactly what's said in the readme file!

If a firmware upgrade doesn't help replace your drive.

Thanks for the help.

I'm reading the read me file. It says to uninstall any packet writing software such as [DLA], [DirectCD], [B's CLiP], etc and to disable [DMA Setting].

I have no idea what that stuff is. How do I find? If you guys don't know or are tired of helping me don't worry about it. I'll just go get a new burner.

For future references, I have a laptop. Is it better to have an external burner, or should I have an internal one installe?

Thanks again

Also, should I run the USB interface firmware upgrade or just the main firmware upgrade listed

1st thing to stop working. Next is singles, then cd's. You got 4 years out of it which is remarkable if you've been burning dvd's the entire time. New drive, problem solved.

Also, should I run the USB interface firmware upgrade or just the main firmware upgrade listed(1) Do not run the USB interface firmware upgrade.

(2) You're using the 700UL version and not the 700A version, so ignore disable [DMA Setting]. Also ignore uninstall any packet writing software ... .

(3) I recommend that you close a) your anti-virus/firewall program(s) and b) your screensaver (if any) before upgrading the firmware. Then execute the Sony updater and do as described in the .pdf file. Do not use other programs as long as the the upgrading procedure is running.

(4) Re-boot after the upgrade, re-start anti-virus/firewall/screensaver, and test your burning device.
