I hope this isn't a stupid question...but I remember using etree's announce list to visit ftps to get shows back when I was getting into shows...but is this type of trading used anymore?

There were many. I know of only one left form the old GD/Garcia days. Other than that site, I only use ftp as a way to upload to servers.

It was nice having shows available 24/7 without torrents dying...

I think WeenFTP is still active, but I haven't used it in years.

everybody is using the 'ftp replacements' like megaupload, rapidshare, zshare, sendspace, etc etc etc in the lossless blogs. that way downloaders can get great speeds and the 'seeder' doesn't have to provide the bandwidth. the last ftp I used was the leonard cohen one a couple years back and it was very very slow!

bluegrassbox too.Ha! true! I grabbed everything from bluegrassbox. Mighty fine!
That whole scene is still alive to say the least.:)
I forgot because bluegrassbox was more an institution than an ftp site.

I still use FTP for some of my trades. Its a great way to save on the high cost of international postage.

Can it? I was just looking today. Where do you find the ftp links? I really don't like downloading from the http links.

I upload to a server at a private site via ftp. There is also one ftp site still running from the lists mentioned in this thread. It's nice because there is no ratio to consider. :lol4:

Next we can talk about the challenges of figuring out how to download from binary newsgroups.

I still have a server that I bring up from time to time for a private exchange, sometimes of a raw master that needs to be mastered/tracked (just last week) or to trade in an artist that is not very electronic trading friendly. But, I also have a few gig of web space Comcast that I can use for temporary storage.

It's nice because there is no ratio to consider.
since when has that stopped you? :hmm:

and on topic: FTP is too slow with big files for most folks nowadays. kinda old-school as far as the kids are concerned, too.

vladsmythe
2008-11-21, 05:54 PM
It hasn't. I'm happy with my ratio, sorry if it bothers you. I upload content and you don't, and that never bugs me about you 'lil buddy. my ftp server runs as fast as anything my isp will allow, so speed is not an issue for me.:)
