View Full Version : Weird... IPs don't match

I have a laptop that I carry back and forth from home to work. I can set up a static IP and forward my port at work, but not at home (I know that sounds backwards; just the way it is).

I come into work this morning and set my static IP. Won't connect.

I change back to automatic IP, jump over to portforward.com to see what they say my IP is. It's different than it was Friday.

I use the command line to check IP of the machine, and it's the same ol' same ol'.

So my machine says one IP (the same number it's always been), but portforward.com says it's something else.

I hope I laid that out clearly.

Any suggestions?

What page does portforward use to check your IP? I use this one (mine changes every couple of days) - http://www.dslreports.com/ip

You really don't need to be concerned with the IP that the world sees you at. You need to be concerned about your 'local' ip which is the one your router sees you at. It usually looks something like 192.168.1.xxx

Thanks for the answer.

It looks like the problem was that another computer on this network was getting the IP I normally use. I should probably set them all up to be static.

I appreciate the help though. :D
