View Full Version : Question about converting.

Okay I have a question. This doesn't pertain to THIS forum inasmuch as me posting to here. Just for my personal use.

I usually rip/convert my shows to .avi and then to whatever format for my Ipod.

However, on a show I just got, the dumbass who did the authoring ripped the show into separate tracks.

So like there's two shows on there.

The first show is complete, in a single file.

The OTHER show is split up into separate files for reach performed song.

So there's like....12 files for the entire performance.

So when I go to rip the thing to .avi, I have to do individual songs and not the entire one.

How exactly can I do this? I use AutoGK and this would totally screw me as far as file size goes if I had to rip them individually and then add them together later with a third party software.

Is there a way I can somehow grab this and rip it as a single avi? Is there an easy way to do this that I'm just not seeing?

I'm not very familiar with authoring, conversions or anything to do with video editing.

to be clear.. are you wanting to join those 12 or so AVIs to a single file, then convert that to MP4 for your iPod or similar?

I think he wants to be able to extract them all as one big avi instead of ending up with 12 avis and then joining them.

oh hell, I miss-took that for him extracting from a cam via firewaire or something...

ok, so you have a DVD, then, with 12 *.VOB files for a show?

I use DVDLabPro to join and demux VOBs for DVDs when I edit them or re-author... if you don't have that or want to buy it, VOBEdit will do it for you... but the VOB may get split if it's over 1GB...

However, when you add them together, there is no IFO file for that one.

AutoGK looks for the IFO file for each file.

not sure what AUtoGK is.. that for iPod converting? I use PQDVD, as it is very forgiving for what you ask it to convert.. and it will convert the VOB directly from DVD.

AutoGK is a program for converting the .vob files to avi according to how big a file you want it.

It's a good program, but it conflicts with my antivirus program so I have to disable it temporarily while it runs otherwise it never is able to FINISH the process because it'll say "cannot access that file it's being used at the moment"

I see... why do you convert to AVI, again? If you're going to iPod, it's more direct to convert straight from VOB (MPEG2) to the MP4 (be it old Quicktime or H.264).

do you have a specific need for AVI?

because I have some friends who also want them so they want them in .avi files

it's a tangled web, I know. lol

Gordian Knot started out as a simple bitrate calculator for video encoding but has evolved to become an integrated package or tool for the entire process of DVD to AVI/MPEG-4 encoding. It combines multiple free software packages to perform the various tasks needed to rip, demux, encode, multiplex and split to size etc. It thereby attempts to combine most tasks with a single frontend to variable degrees of effectiveness.

Gordian Knot is normally distributed as a program pack and a codec pack. Here's a list of the integrated software Gordian Knot consists of:

1. Main Gordian Knot Program
2. VirtualDubMod
3. NanDub
4. AviSynth PlugIns
5. Besweets + azidts
6. DGMPGDec
7. ChapterXtractor
8. vStrip
9. Robot4Rip
10. VobSub Rip Wizard
11. VobSub
12. AviSynth

The Softwares & their versions are Package Version dependent. The "Codec pack" consists of all the supported necessary codecs for encoding with Gordian Knot.

jeez.. ok

so you need an IFO file to work with GK?

I think IFOEdit can do that for you, once you make your VOBs. Do a search for IFOEdit on videohelp.com for usage.

maybe someone reading is familiar enough with IFOEdit to know what to tell him, here?

lol...I'm such an idiot, I know, I know.

I'm almost at the point where I think I'm just going to have to rip them separately. It was broadcast on the internet that way. Individual videos instead of one long stream.

If I rip them though that's gonna make the file size of the finished version jump sky high.

Oh well...the couple of people who wanted it can send me some blanks and postage. lol

This is too much b.s to go through. ha ha
