Cataloging Bootlegs

What is the best way to Cataloging my bootlegs and keep track of them if you

1. What is the fastest way to do it
2. What would be the (probaly) longer but better way.

tapetrader or phishhook would be the fastest because its based off users current lists, you just look up artists & date and its likely that someone already has it on their list, so you just add it from the collection of known shows.

the longer way, which def. takes more discipline and harder for updates, is to get a movie database cataloger(i use all my movies), what i like about this is it analyzes the dvd for size, +/-R, I then convert this to an excel file and try to make an update like two times a year, ditching the old excel file for the newer one, there is just way more that can be done using software as opposed to web based.

I thought the fastet way would just be to make a text file and copy and paste the name of the boot the artist and date.

the prob with that is you need to separate each artist/ date and figure it out for yourself what date goes where, if you have a ton of stuff to catalog it would be hard to figure everything out with what goes where, adding new boots (with software) automatically puts the new show according to date/artist no need to clear space in the appropriate spot in a text file. hope is helped! for a newbie id say phishook is the way to go!

Also is db.tree anygood.

I use something quite similar called CaTraxx that I bought a few years ago. It's very good for cataloging official cd's because of the cddb but I've also found that many boots are also identified by cddb. :D

Of course it can only log shows that are burned to disc but I do burn the shows I keep.

http://www.catraxx.net/yeah I like the programs that use the CDDB license. the freedb.org is kinda bunk imo.
Catalog your audio file collection. CATraxx can automatically create albums from folders containing audio files.whoa ..this is a hot feature. the other software will only catalog from a burned disc.

other possibilities is list making software

i use list alphabetizer by vasilios

if you have all your boots in a folder, this will make a clone list of all the folder/files that will save to .txt. rtf or .pdf

i use this method to make list for all my house/dj sets

If you have an account, you add artists to your artists list.

You click on "add a show", then select artist, if the artist is not on your list, you click on "update artist list". Once you found the artist and added him to your list,you then click the "search" button on top. You then select the third option, the one at the bottom, "search by artist and date etc" I don't remember all the details, and the search finds all the shows by that artist, arranged choronogically. You don't add the show date, just the artist, and it will pull up all the shows by that artist on tapetrader's DB.

You find the show you have, if there are many listings you pick the one that has the information you like, then put a check mark next to it and click "add to my list".

etree is great, but I find it a little had to work with. I use phishhook.com, but I also export my list from there about once a month because I just have this feeling that one day it's going to disappear. The export file I put into Excel.

I use db.etree as well. Once you get everything in there the first time, it's easy to update. It's also able to be skinned, so you can change the look. Here's mine: http://db.etree.org/jonohull

To add shows, do a search here (keep it general): http://www.tapetrader.com/search/show_search.cfm

And if the results show up your gigs, add them to your own list.

I store all information about all my songs in Media Catalog Studio (http://www.maniactools.com/soft/media_catalog_studio/index.shtml). In this database I can easily find the track providing a word from the lyrics or the title or some additional information - file size and its frequency.

I've never used phishook but I did try tapetrader once. I found tape trader much harder than etree to add shows and artists. Etree is more versital imho. you can search (http://db.etree.org/shows_search.php) for a show using artist and/or date. As you type in artist suggestions appear. No need to fill iin date as the result will be a page with all the years an artist has boots in the database, click a year and all the bots for that year appear.

On the search page you can just enter the date and all shows for that date are listed by artist.

Or you can enter both artist and date and if show is in the data base you are taken directly to the page for that show. The just click the "Add Show to My Collection" and just enter source, number of discs, and any other info in the notes you want. Like in the notes you can denote where something is archived at so you can locate it.

I also have an html list on my computer that tells me where everything is. Only take a few seconds to add a show but one has to know html and javascript.
