Burn DVDs from files on an external HD?

Has anyone burned DVDs from files that are stored on an external Hard Drive?
Is the process slower than the normal internal HD>DVD burner?

I want to store ISO images on an external hard drive & then be able to burn those ISOs to DVD. If the burn process is not slower.

I do it all the time with firewire and usb 2.0 drives. It's not a problem at all.
I have only burned at 4x, but have burned CDs at faster speeds, though probably only as fast as 12x since I only burn anything important at 4x/8x and my CD-RW media is only 12x.

I do it all the time as well and I too can say it's no problem and takes no additional time (via USB).
