Did you use Paint to spray paint the background black? If so, you can conserve more resources by disabling any background image. You can then change the background color to black.

I've got one of those before. It was from software I installed, I don't remember how it went away though :( just try uninstalling the last thing you installed or whatever before you noticed it.
