I like the Philips DVP642. About $50. I've bought many that are in my garage for one reason or another. I need it for PAL. I then make NTSC backups, which I share with friends who are PAL challenged. I also use a Panasonic standalone for that task. Why do you want to watch data files on TV?
A friend of mine was using Nero and was accidentally burning them as data discs instead of dvd video files. My sony dvd player actually read them and played them when none of my other decks would. FYI, If you are watching PAL dvds stay away from Toshiba, Daewoo and Memorex. Those all have either audio or video hiccups on playback. I hope this helps you.

I don't think you're gonna be able to do that. The player I mentioned does support mp3 on cd-rw. Why don't you store your library on dvd and burn cds of mp3s? Shit, a cd will hold a bunch of tunes, and they're cheap. If you value your discography, you should keep them out of harm's way with the inevitable wear and tear (beer, scratches and other contaminants) associated with music playback. You could also buy an external HD that would store more mp3s than you'll ever have. But I should ask the question - without condemnation, WHY MP3? Good luck!

On videohelp.com, they have a DVD player review area. You can put in your requirements and it will spit out the results. It's a great site!
