I bought a new Dell with Vista. It has Windows Media Player which plays the show; and a Windows DVD Maker which is supposed to burn DVDs.

BUT when I try to add a video I got off Traders Den (I've tried two videos) I get a message that "No Items Match My Search". What now?

Also the Windows prograsm don't seem to recognize VOB files. Now what?

Dell technicians have been no help.

DVD maker is for authoring not burning you could try just dragging the VIDEO_TS folder to the dvd or get ONES (http://shop.tx-software.com/boutique/liste_produits.cfm?type=7&code_lg=lg_us)

Thanks for the advice, but it did not work for me.

I downloaded the 30 day trial version of ONES. When I tried to use it , I got a message saying the trial period had expired, askignif I wantd the full program. I decided if it could not get the trial period right, I did not want to risk time or money on it.

ONES or Nero 7 are the best DVD burning programs for Windows, but ONES is $25 and Nero is about $80. Nero costs more because it comes bundled with a bunch of other programs (wav editor, recode, vision, etc.). A lot of people (including mods) use ONES here, I would definitely trust it. You can download a trial version of Nero from www.nero.com

I just found a link on another thread for Nero 7 Essentials Suite $6.00

What exactly didn't work?

Heres how

This method works for archiving audio it allows multiple sessions like a floppy disk

I never got to the application part. I downloaded the 30-day trial version to see if would work. When I tried the application, I got a message that the 30-day trial period had expired. I've been so frustrated dealing with the Dell and Microsoft folks and the three or so programs that came with the computer that I said to myself --if they can't get the 30-day trial periiod thing right I'm not so sure I wnat to trust they didn't screw something else up.

I'm more relaxed today. I may risk it today.

To be sure, after I download a video from Traders' Den, which I can do now, ONES will translate the VOB files into files (AVI or some other) that I can burn using Windows DVD Maker or Windows Medis Player? or can be used to burn VOB fiels directly onto a DVD?

AND (and this is critical) I can play it in a DVD player connected to a television.

I already can burn onto a data disc that plays in computers. (but won't play in DVD player connected to the televison)

All the DVD uploaded at Traders Den have been authored by programs that do what Windows DVD Maker does so you don't want to use that. VOBs are the files that DVDs use. Ones will burn the files as is.

When you say the data disc will not play what model DVD player are you using and what does the file structure on the DVD disc look like?
What's on a DVD?

What exactly is on a DVD disc? What are VOB, IFO and BUP files? All this will be explained here.

When you access the DVD drive you'll see at least 2 directories:

22.08.2000 03:20 <DIR> AUDIO_TS
22.08.2000 05:53 <DIR> VIDEO_TS

AUDIO_TS is used for DVD Audio and contains the audio files, whereas VIDEO_TS is used to store all data for the movie. There might be more directories which contain DVD-ROM features for your PC.

Now let's have a look at the VIDEO_TS directory:

22.08.2000 05:53 <DIR> .
22.08.2000 03:20 <DIR> ..
22.08.2000 05:23 12'288 VIDEO_TS.BUP
22.08.2000 05:23 12'288 VIDEO_TS.IFO
22.08.2000 05:23 333'824 VIDEO_TS.VOB
22.08.2000 05:23 59'392 VTS_01_0.BUP
22.08.2000 05:23 59'392 VTS_01_0.IFO
22.08.2000 05:23 8'192 VTS_01_0.VOB
22.08.2000 05:27 1'073'643'520 VTS_01_1.VOB
22.08.2000 05:31 1'073'631'232 VTS_01_2.VOB
22.08.2000 05:32 104'785'920 VTS_01_3.VOB
22.08.2000 05:32 88'064 VTS_02_0.BUP
22.08.2000 05:32 88'064 VTS_02_0.IFO
22.08.2000 05:32 59'379'712 VTS_02_0.VOB
22.08.2000 05:36 1'073'436'672 VTS_02_1.VOB
22.08.2000 05:40 1'073'549'312 VTS_02_2.VOB
22.08.2000 05:45 1'073'502'208 VTS_02_3.VOB
22.08.2000 05:49 1'073'371'136 VTS_02_4.VOB
22.08.2000 05:53 1'073'555'456 VTS_02_5.VOB
22.08.2000 05:57 810'952'704 VTS_02_6.VOB

As you can see there's 3 types of files on a DVD: .VOB, .IFO and .BUP:

There must have been a bundled burning prorgam such as nero, roxio, sonic, right. So what model Dell did you get and what programs are listed in the bundled software?

iirc... its a stripped down version of sonic, which i think is only good for the uninstall routine... i know alot of people here swear by ones... ive used nero since ver. 3 or 4, and have never had any problems ymmv

I have used the Dell bundled Sonic under XP at work but will look more at the Vista options tonight or tomorrow night at work. Most programs will work just how big a PITA it is makes people go for better options.

The file structure on the Data DVD looks like the one on the computer hard drive files and similar to the ones in the article you copied

My DVD player is Panasonic DVD-RV32.

My computer is a new Dell XPS with Windows Vista Home Premium Operating system. It came with:

Windows Media Player (which is the one I use to view videos)

Windows Media Player (whcih I use so far only to view pictures I've taken)

Windows DVD Maker - which I have not used for anything so far.

I have Roxio Creator DE - I had no clue this was there or how it got there. It's a Sonic Solutions product.

I have Yahoo Music Jukebox (a carryover from MusicMatch days) to listen to and burn audio discs.

Does that help any?

Roxio Creator should work for you. I haven't seen the DE version I used to have a screen cap showing how it's done on a different version but it's gone

I will look at the current version I have on another machine to see if that would be of any help. What kind of menu options does RC-DE have

I'm trying the Roxio Creater DE. It's taking forever.

I have 16x blank DVD and 16x burner yet the process is barely half through. Since it started I have taken a shower, dressed, played with my cat, drove to a BBQ place, finding it closed I drove across town to another BBQ place, pigged out on ribs there, drove home, and the program says "Overall Progress 72%". That's 2-3 hours so far burning time (and I still must keep my fingers crossed the DVD will play in a DVD). Every program is closed on the computer except the Roxio.

Maybe this is the 30 day trial version of ONES, and the full version has faster speed. I'll check that out next.

Thanks for getting me this far.

Sounds like it may be re-encoding the files do you know if the show was NTSC or PAL? What torrent was it ?

Exactly. If you are just making a DVD, it should not take so long. I would check you settings.

Totally frustrating experience.

After about three hours I get an error message - no words just numbers.

Dvd did not play in DVD Player; AND when I tried to play it in my computer it showed up as a blank DVD!

The Roxio Creator has an upgrade to Creator 9; but since I've failed in every attempt I'm about ready to give up. Wasting so many hours over so many days is demoralizing to get no positive results.

I'll see how I'm feeling Tuesday.

Totally frustrating experience.

Now you're on the right track! :) I remember trying to burn my first DVD. After I got it burnt, it took me about 3 days to figure out how I did it. I suggest you use ONES. It really is super easy to use. Good Luck.

Okay- I tried to buy ONES. Took three tries to make the website realize I am not in France.

I've paid for it. But no explanation yet on how or when I can download.

You know : I've always peferred Audios to Videos. But I got all these DVD programs with my new computer - thought I'd try some videos. None do the full job of course! and Dell Support sucks. There are many enticing videos on Traders' Den. But if I cannot get ONES download , or if the DVDs still do not play on my DVD player I'll take it as a sign I should stick with Audio shows. They make me happy.

i'm pretty sure with ONES you get a registration code/key when you buy...then you enter that into the demo prgram you d/led...that should open the program up for use

HMMM - I deleted the demo el pronto. I'll re-load and see what happens.

I re-loaded ONES demo. I got the 30-day limit has expired message; but I also got a screen that I could burn DVD.

So I did.

video plays on my DVD player and on my computer ---

BUT NO SOUND. I got his same result the other day (don't recall what I did then)

I check the Project Settings and ALL the Audio selections are grayed out - that may be the way they control the limitations period, but I don't know.

AAR suggesteed earlier I enter a key code on ONES to get unlimited version but I cannot locate anywhere to enter that code.

Any suggestions on (a) gettin Audio
(b) entering key code on ONES

To bring you up to date, I ordered ONES on May 28. It took several tries to do that because they kept thinking I was in France.

Then when I got to the English page and paid, they did not contact me on how to install ONES.

After a few desperate pleas here, and two or three emails to ONES (every day or so) asking for help, I told myself I'd give ONES untiltoday ( Monday) May 4 to respond or I'd call VISA and cancel my payment.

I woke to an email from ONES (actually four emails).

One had instructions on how to download ONES.

It was in French.

Pardon my French, but I don't speak or read French.

But at this point who needs instructions as long as I had a password (mot de passe, sil vous plait).

I downloaded easily enough; and have burned Todd Snider show - have sound, have video. The video started with Todd and not his opening act, but at this point who cares.

I can make copies.

Thanks to all who offered advice.
