Ripping and Splitting

I would like to make a music video and upload it to youtube. For that I have tons of bootlegs but I want to know a software which will be able to convert dvds into avi format and a software which can split the files so if i only want like 5 seconds of the clip. I know many softwares but I want one which will still keep the great quality and not be all pixelated and messed up.

for free, you're probably gonna end up using virtualdub.

I found the best thing for quality on youtube is divx try Dr. Divx (http://www.divx.com/divx/drdivx/)
Able to convert most input files Dr. DivX can convert most input files including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VOB, AVI, FLV, MOV, MP4, AVISynth scripts to DivX.
Uses available DivX encoder If you install a new version of the DivX encoder, Dr. DivX automatically uses it for encoding.
