Converting DVDs

Hello folks, I need your help. How can I convert a .avi-file into a playable dvd or vcd format? This might be a stupid question for you, but I really don`t know it. Is there any (free) software available to convert these files? ... Thanks for your help in advance.

just about any burning prog [nero, roxio, etc] should be able to burn an avi as a vcd directly...also check videohelp.com as martin said

i'm assuming this is for personal use only...these would not be seedable here and shouldn't be traded really
