One thing to add would be that the conventional wisdom very strongly suggests going with DVD+R DL rather than DVD-R DL.

I have to go buy a dvd burner. I have been burning cd's for years, but the dvd thing is new to me. Are there any features I should look for in a burner? Is there any type of blank dvd's I should get for burning shows I downloaded? I am just finishing up a 12+ gig GD show, and I want to make sure I get the right equipment. Thanks in advance for the help.

Check out the drives from tigerdirect.com good prices, good rebates (you have to be patient but the check will arrive eventually) save your UPC code!
Just get a 16x DVD-RW drive that supports dual layer (designated by DL)

Is there usually a note in the torrent text file, letting me know if I need a double layer disc to burn that particular show, or do I need to use double layer all the time?

Most DVD torrents seeded at TheTradersDen.org are authored for single layer (DVD5) discs. If a particular torrent uses dual layer (DVD9) discs, then it is noted clearly in the torrent description.

If you want your discs to be playable in 3+ years time, then buy a spindle of Taiyo Yuden discs. Burn them at 4X speed (15 minutes to burn a full DVD5 disc). If you're burning dual layered discs, then I've heard good things about the Verbatim line of dvds but I don't have any personal experience using them.
