View Full Version : The "It's broken, please fix it" thread...

We are working on getting the new servers all ready for the move. Along with moving to our new servers, we are also upgrading some of our software. I don't anticipate any major problems {Lynne knocks on wood}. If you do notice something 'broken', please post it here so I can go fix it.

02-15-2007: We have finally moved!

Known Issues to Fix: (last updated 2/27/2006)
- upload/download speeds and connection time on Peers List - still unsure of what is going on here
- tracker seeders/leechers tracker stats are getting zapped every once in a while - I'm not sure if this is still going on
- upload/download stats are not updating (I'm pretty sure this is fixed, I'll keep an eye on it.)
- cron job to clean tracker stats
- tracker stats not showing on search/forumdisplay - we used to show the stats next to the thread when you looked in the ABT/VBT forums or after looking at New Posts - they are now showing, but still have the zapped bug above
- add xCache to the apache server
- basic server optimization - this will actually be ongoing for a bit since whenever you tweak something, you want to sit back and see how the server reacts

ok.. it was gone for a bit and it's back... I assume that means you've switched...

the search hauls ass... major difference on this end.

EDIT: holy crap... everything is faster! It's flying. :thumbsup

Sorry James, but we haven't actually switched over yet. I think you are just hitting a good time on the server.

Scott is preparing it all for the move, but I told him I want to test it out prior to actually doing it. He's in Europe, so I have a feeling I won't be testing it tonight, but probably tomorrow. I guess I should change the front page to say it may actually happen tomorrow.

The only "error" I am seeing is that for the past few hours I am showing as being firewalled underneath the "Welcome, durian1" section and in the peers lists of what I am downloading I am showing up as normal (not firewalled).

U2Lynne
2007-02-11, 07:22 PM
If you are showing up as Firewalled below your name, then at least one of the torrents you are on is showing you as firewalled. Just stop it and start it again and the Firewalled sign should go away (assuming you are not firewalled as you said).

(And btw, we have not switched over to the new server yet. Maybe I should have waited to make this thread until then.)

(perhaps you can send me your email address and I can have all the error messages sent to your email addy instead of mine, then you might not feel that we should keep this same server. :D )

2007-02-13, 05:56 PM
Perhaps you couldn't get to the site because we changed the nameservers in anticipation of the move? Or else you experienced the problems with the upstream host that we were having for the last two days (which has slowed some of the move down because we haven't been able to ftp or ssh to the site).

You know, our host usually has no problems, but when I decide I want to move the site, the host has one upstream provided decide to do a router software upgrade, then they had a DDoS attack, then another upstream provider had access problems. All this in the last three or four days.

May I ask what type of database you are using, Lynne?

U2Lynne
2007-02-16, 04:03 PM
Yes, we are still with Quickpacket. Today's fuck-up was just one of those things. They rarely have problems, but today it just so happens it was in the middle of our move.

Yes, I know those stats aren't there. They are currently commented out because your get an error if I leave it in. We moved up to php5 and mysql5 and so some of our code/queries break the site because of the changes.

We are using mysql5 now on the site. We were using mysql4.

The torrent stats are way off here:

http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=34245

is that related? My client shows hundreds, but the tracker stats show 11 - and it doesn't show me, either.

Has the tracker reset or something and is waiting for the cilents to scrape in?

U2Lynne
2007-02-16, 05:22 PM
Yeah, the torrent stats are off for some reason. The number completed is staying constant, but the number of peers shown on the front page and the S/L stats keep going up and then down, then up, then down. It's like they get zapped every little while. I need to look into why that is, cuz I'm a bit puzzled over it right now.

Strange things are happening. I started a torrent download of
Weather Report July 8, 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival last night. The torrent stopped several times so I came back here and messaged several people who had downloaded it recently to see if they would reseed. I finally got to 99.8% complete and then no more. I came back here and the thread for it is gone. I do a search and it says no such thread. I looked in the orphaned section- it's not there either. Is this related to the server change or something else?
Thanks for any information,
David

I know you don't want to hear this type pf stuff yet, but my stats aren't updating (or is the display just frozen at the previous text?).

I've uploaded 13.7 GB since last night, and none of it has registered in my upload count / ratio.

I don't really care, but if no one's stats are registering, it might create create a lot of work for you guys manually updating soon.

Not a major thing and I'm sure you've noticed it Lynne....The seed/leeches on the torrents seem to be "right"....but, the stats dont show anyone ul/dl 'ng anything, our individual stats are not updating, and when you're on the main page of ABT/VBT, you can no longer see the seeds/leeches/completes...

OTOH, my stats haven't budged yet, and the torrent web pages on the three torrents I'm running are showing no movement and only a fraction of the seeds and leechers, even though my client shows things are swimming along at a normal pace.

Which is fine, the music's getting spread and I'm not worried about my ratio.

Don't worry about the firewall thing. That is purely something that our tracker does one check for. When you are connecting to other users, your bittorrent clients will be checking often to see if you are really firewalled.

I see some people updating. I'm not sure why they are and others aren't. This is one confusing puzzle for me. :hmm:

Yep. It's like every once in a while, the peers table is dumped? :hmm: or the peers/leechers number is redone? :hmm: Seriously, this is a weird problem. The peers table came over as MyISAM (I think that was the type) and so I changed it to MEMORY (formerly HEAP). I'm not sure yet what affect that has had. I am actually seeing some speeds showing up now. I'll keep at it.

Update:
Ah, something's happening, my ratio just budged up (less than activity since the downtime, but who cares) and the "Activity on the tracker" field on my user page now shows all three torrents where it showed only one a few minutes ago. But the individual show pages, although perhaps a little more populated, still portray the torrents as not moving when they are (or were when I was last at my host machine).

A thousand thanks for all that you do.....

My 3 showed a few of the peers shown on their web pages had some very smallish transfer activity when I checked 5 min. ago, but now seem to show fewer peers connected than before, and zero activity again. Seems like each time I go back and refresh the pages the population changes, as if different peers are making and losing connection (though I seem to be staying hooked up). Or maybe it's users who are deliberately dropping and trying to reconnect.

Dunno what my client's up to now b/c it's 25 mi. away. I never terminated my connections during the downtime, perhaps that's why it's been able to hang on all night and morning and my uploads have apparently persisted throughout. Are folks who hung up having trouble reconnecting to the tracker?

That what "delete ghosts" is supposed to do. It deletes all your current activity on the tracker so that the next time it updates it only has you listed once on a torrent.

This show: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23028&highlight=good ? It's going along just fine. Here's the list of common bt errors: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/faq.php?faq=bittorrent#faq_getaddrinco That one says to just wait a bit and it should clear itself up.

(That is an old show - over eight months old. Also, you are firewalled which means you may only connect to others who are NOT firewalled. That may be causing you downloading problems.)

2007-02-18, 12:28 AM
on this show...
http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=33783

my client shows I'm upping about 40kB to the same four peers who show on the page. My ratio has climbed, and my totals up and down roughly match on the two ends. I've stayed on throughout this little drama, so the latter suggests the totals and ratio caught up with what moved while the web display was messed up.

BUT the above show page persists in showing traffic barely at a crawl while my client reports me at 40 up and two peers pulling healthy 70-100kB peer downloads. I've been watching and refreshing it for 15-20 min. so the page should reflect reasonably current data by now?

So it looks as if the tracker is correctly crediting the ratios and totals, but there may still be problems with what it's reporting to the pages about speeds (as if I have a clue how this stuff works) :D

Not causing me any problems, just reporting in ....

g'nite, and thanks again!

I don't thinkit's twice.. I think it's showing Seeders+Leechers sum. I think.

At first I was worried that we were getting attacked by the RIAA torrent bots that fill up seeder slots and send out corrupted pieces to leeches. You see them all over torrents @ demonoid. The RIAA has a few shell companies that download a good copy of a torrent, corrupt every piece in the hash and resend to the swarm. Everyone downloads a piece, it's no good, then starts downloading again. Times 1000. Fucks up the .torrent unless each individual client (peer) bans the IP range. Luckily, the RIAA is still stupid, so they use a sequential range of IPs to spam the swarm, making it pretty easy to ID and block.

Anyway, I started one or two torrents and watched to see if any of the known RIAA IPs showed up (38.x.x.x blocks) and sent bad pieces to me, and that did not happen, so I figured we were safe from that. Then I noticed this morning that ALL the torrents now have shit loads of seeds. :lol

I just ran the cleaner. I thought I had it set up before taking off. The thread above had some outrageous number of leechers on it and the cleaner got rid of them. I'll have to look into what is up with that. I have a feeling a few of the php/mysql problems I'm seeing are related.

Yeah, I've been watching the site all f*cking day long. I go to dinner, and it happens. It's related to whatever happened on the day of the 'time' problem. Something weird happened that day around this time also. I'd love to narrow down a time frame. Joe, you posted at 5:42 my time (CA).... it is now 7:11 my time. I'm gonna run the cleaner and see what happens. However, if you can help me narrow down the time, it would really help.

edit: running the cleaner made it all fine. What I don't understand is why the cleaner isn't running. I have it set to do so, but it isn't? :hmm: I have confirmation that it supposedly is (I ask for a confirmation 'statement'). ARGH!

Server optimization was done today. We've had real, nice, low server loads since then. :thumbsup We'll continue to tweak the settings to get them just right.

I'm still working on the issue of the double seeds that show up sometime between 4-5 pm California time. I made some changes to the cleaner script, so maybe that may have a positive affect on this issue.

Hey Lynne: Thanks for all your awesome work on the transition to the new server. I just wanted to note one other flaw that no one else seems to have mentioned. It's that the 'e-mail notification of private message' function appears to be buggered. I always received an e-mail when I had a PM prior to the server switch, but since then the PMs have arrived, and I have had no e-mail to let me know. I took a look at my options, and the notify box is definitely checked. It's a small point, since I'm logged on here so often, but just FYI :)

U2Lynne
2007-02-27, 07:05 PM
Hmmmm, strange. I hate ones like this cuz I know I'm getting my PM emails. Maybe try turning Off the option and Save and then turn On the option and save. See if that changes things. (You don't have certain emails blocked, do you? I just noticed that the emails are coming from [email protected] right now, not [email protected], which is what it used to be . I'll see if I can find where I goofed in that setting.)

edit to add: I found the setting and changed it back to how it was.

Where does it come up with that number?!?! I mean, why (2^32)-1? And why does it only do that to the leechers. I've never seen it happen to the seeds number. :hmm:

first, i just want to say thank you for all the hard work you've been putting into the move. i know computers can be a real bitch when it comes to stuff like that. i wanted to let you know that i don't think my ratio is regestering. well, i think the download side is, but definately not the upload side. i've had a few torrents going for prob about a week or so, and my ratio came down accordingly. a few days ago they all finished and i've been seeding steadly since then, but my upload hasn't changes at all. i know it tales longer to upload and it goes up slower, but it should've definatley gone up some by now. i've been letting them seed 24/7 for close to a week now. just a fyi...

chewie, I'll watch your profile. However, right now I'm not seeing you on any torrents (none are listed until your profile). That could be because we just rebooted apache after making some changes, I'll check again in a bit.

Your stats when I originally posted: (758.15 GB/705.38 GB/0.93)

Are you continuing to get the error? I can see you on the Peers List for that torrent right now, so you are connected.

Hi U2Lynne, yes still have the errors.
On BitTorrent nothing happening at all.
One torrent (LZ Knebworth) downloading, but 0 up/0 down. Others have completed but 0 up!
On Azureus Health was showing red. Just gone blue. 3 peers shown but 0 up/0 down.

U2Lynne
2007-03-11, 03:41 PM
And what is the error you are getting from the tracker? (Are you trying to torrent the same show from two different bittorrent clients? That will definitely cause problems.)

edit: some of the torrents you are on have 0 leechers, so there is no way you can upload anything to them.

Azureus - hit Update Tracker. Now downloading at 200 bits/sec. Could take a while!

Yes re posting I only have one ADSL connection. Bit Torrent and Azeureus are on the same machine/router/adsl connection.

U2Lynne
2007-03-11, 04:00 PM
Try stopping the two Budgie shows since there are no leechers on them. Then you will only have 5 shows open, so you should not get that connection limit error. The Page and Plant one is a good one to upload to since everyone else is firewalled except you, which means you will be the only uploader. If you try to seed too many shows, the limits your upload speed and sometimes leechers clients will skip over you because your upload speed is slower than other seeders.

Make sure if you have both bittorrent and Azureus open that you are using different ports for each of them and that you do not have the same shows open in both clients, especially the show you are downloading.

** Forget about that Page/Plant comment, I must have looked up the wrong show when seeing what shows you were on.

B*andolier
2007-03-11, 04:02 PM
Yes I am trying to torrent the same show from 2 clients as BitTorrent had taken 10 days to get to 40 per cent. They seemed to be helping each other along earlier today!!

I had not tried the Azureus client but it seems much more informative about what is happening. I will stop using the BitTorrent client. Do I have to do anything to put things back as they should be?

So if no one is currently taking the shows I have on my hard drive 0 uploads. Makes sense! Some one is currently taking the Sabbath show.

So if I move to just the one client, I would choose Azureus, can I make the downloads I have completed available to others via that client and if so how?

U2Lynne
2007-03-11, 04:10 PM
The problem with trying to download the same show from two different clients is that you download shows in 'chunks'. A chunk comes in various sizes depending on what the torrent maker selects. So, if a chunk is 12 units big, then you don't get 'credit' for the chunk until you get all 12 of those units. Since your bittorrent clients don't talk to each other, they could both be working on the same chunk. And, one could overwrite what is going on with the other. It can cause real big problems. If all you are doing is uploading, it won't cause so many problems since you aren't writing to your hard drive. I would pick one bittorrent client to have open at a time.

To add, you noticed how you went down in % completion when you changed bittorrent clients. That is because usually the client won't write to the drive until that chunk is complete. So, you may have had 40% complete, but it could have all been in unwriten chunks. Thus, you stopped and then switched clients and only got credit for what was writen to your harddrive.
