View Full Version : Still can't download anything after a month...

I don't know what's going on. I completed like on thing like a month ago but no other torrent is working at all. I've had this Jimi Hendrix torrent at 96.3% for the past three weeks and it's not doing anything. I tried force starting it and nothing happened. Am I doing something wrong? I'd really like to get this Hendrix torrent and other Hendrix torrents but they're not working for some reason. I even uninstalled my mcafee firewall.

hmmm... you've downloaded 3.5GB.. is that the one thing you completed? I ask because if what you got wasn't that large, I wonder if you are downloading the same pieces over and over again due to them being corrupt (not matching the hash) after you get them? That can happen if you have squirrelly RAM or a HD that has some bad sectors.

Let's start by seeing what client you use, and maybe taking a screen shot and posting that showing your torrents running that aren't working.

Step by step, what are you doing?

What Hendrix show are you trying to get? Copy and paste a link to the thread.

I see you trying to download three shows from here. Are you also trying to download shows from other sites too? What is your max upload and download speed (google "speed test" and you'll find several sites to get this information)? Are you limiting your upload or download speeds in anyway? Also, you are firewalled, so you can only download/upload to/from other users who are NOT firewalled.

Which client do you use? It's weird, cos even if your port was closed you should be downloading from peers whose ports are open with no prob, but you say you aren't getting anything at all.
Same prob. with all the torrents you're getting from other sites?
it sounds as if your settings were wrong, so I guess it has an easy solution.
If you added any info we could help.

Alright well the reason I had three was I'm just trying to see if it's me or not. I've just been doing alot of different ones randomly and letting them sit to see if they work. Some stuff started but then just stopped so I just gave up on it and cancelled it. I think the only thing I completed was some neil young cd but that was over a month ago. This last one has just been sitting at 96.3 for the past three weeks though... heres the one thats just been sitting forever. http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26189&highlight=jimi+hendrix

heres what my Utorrent looks like

there are seeders on all of the torrents you are downloading, except the "Axis Sessions", but you cannot connect with them

DCbmx 17

Yeah but for the Mixdown masters I've had seeders on it for the past three weeks and it just hasnt moved. I've let other stuff sit for over a week too and nothing. I've got 47 seeds for the axis one now but it's not moving.

are these 47 seeders inside or outside the parenthesis? :hmm:

but anyway if there are 47 seeders on a torrent and you cannot connect with any of them, then you most likely have a firewall issue

DCbmx 17

Well they're inside them, I know they need to be on the outside but I think that's my problem, should I be using a different client or what? Well thats the thing, this site says I'm firewalled, I uninstalled McAfee a few hours ago and don't have a firewall in right now, window's firewall is turned off.

SundayDriver
2006-11-27, 11:39 PM
no, a different client will not help. you have a firewall issue and need to foward the port that your BT client uses (provided you can control this) to allow p2p traffic.

Yeah I tried doing the port thing, the site I was looking at kind of had crappy instructions, I have no idea what I'm doing with this stuff. What's the port number that I'm looking for? I guess maybe it doesnt help i'm on a college server.

I am almost certain there is nothing you can do about it then.

Well I mean I've already gotten 96.3% of it already, I mean it took like over 2 weeks to get that but isn't there anyway I can get the last little bit? That's probably the most important thing to me, Hendrix is my favorite musician.

Right, you got that 96.3% from a seeder or seeders that you were able to connect with given your current settings.

So now you will have to wait for a seeder or seeders that have those same settings and a complete copy of the torrent so you can connect with them and finish downloading.

somebody is keeping the traffic away from you.. likely because they detect p2p traffic. uTorrent has some ways to spoof that... you can start by not using the default port. The utorrent site has some details on the other tricks in the documentation.

I have found that in situations where the network admin was not very good that I could use port 80 for BT and it would scream right through. Also try port 21 (those are the generic http and ftp ports).

You problem is that you are on the college's resnet and they don't want you using p2p on it. That's going to damper your BT activities unless you can find the magic hole the admin may have left open.

Uh oh, you said a Bad Word - college server. They are getting better and better a preventing torrenting. I would try changing your port numbers and seeing if that helps. Then, if you know others on campus that use bittorrent, ask if they are having problems. And, if you know someone off campus, ask them if you can try out a torrent there and see if it works.

edit: James just reminded me of something else you can try - go to Options > Preferences > BitTorrent tab. Then, under Protocol Encryption, try setting that to Enabled (actually, just play with the different settings there because I'm really not certain exactly what to try but I know it's that setting.)

changing a port in most cases will have no effect, but it's always good to try

I should be clearer here and say that I actually tried to be slick one time (imagine that ;) ) and tried configuring uTorrent to port 21, the FTP port. I noticed that FTP uploads and downloads were going at rather fast speeds, around 2-3 MBs/s. I didn't expect to get those speeds with P2P, but I figured it might be worth the try to see if that port was left untouched.

Well, I was wrong. :lmao:

I think what happens is that once the server recognizes the data as P2P, it blocks automatically. But that's a little murky, and in fact I'm not 100% sure how that works. Really, I don't care so much, since I am quite capable of downloading the torrents, albeit at slow speeds, but uploading is a different story.....

hey Lynne, I flipped that option to enabled and it appears to have worked, I saw a speed adjustment from 15 kb/s to around 100 kb/s. :thumbsup

Interesting.....

maybe it will work for DCbmx17 as well....

who knows, maybe all he needs is a little DumbLuck to help him out

Oh James... :disbelief

I hope that does work out for you DumbLuck. I hate that some of these ISPs promise us certain speeds and then decide to try to throttle us just because we actually try to put all that speed to use!

Ok well I did that preference thing and switched it to forced and all the sudden I got two people to connect on different torrents and they're downloading fast as hell....

Damn I'm finally getting my Hendrix, thanks alot for the help.

Promotion for Azureus = Apple user

Lynne, I am on a network connection like DCbmx 17, so technically no ISP locally is involved in my case.

I'm still a bit curious about this option, since the torrent I was downloading had many seeders. I'm still firewalled (not what the feature is meant for to begin with which I knew), but if this option did allow for the faster transfer rates, than this is great. :thumbsup

Yeah before my fastest speed was like 2 kb/s

Here are a couple of articles/documents to explain encryption:

Encrypting Bittorrent to take out traffic shapers (http://torrentfreak.com/encrypting-bittorrent-to-take-out-traffic-shapers/)
BitTorrent protocol encryption (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol_Encryption)

However, notice this part under the second link:

Many ISPs are now using more sophisticated measures (such as Deep packet inspection) to detect BitTorrent traffic. This means that even encrypted BitTorrent traffic is now throttled. However, for those using primitive methods to identify and throttle BitTorrent, the current solution remains extremely effective.

So, you may want to make sure you are always downloading the latest versions of your clients to stay ahead of these "more sophisticated measures." (Although, if it's just the university, they may not always be keeping up-to-date on this throttling.)

Yeah I go to a university, I know people that have gotten onto limewire through the network but no other P2Ps would work.

DCbmx 17, some of your downloads are shown as forced. Don't force any one, just do what I do, in this way you could download all the torrents you want, only you decide which ones to keep on getting and which ones you stop. So you don't need to force any download/upload, this is not recommended.

Change your settings in this way:

My client is in Spanish, so this is my screen:

interesting articles :thumbsup

I am confident that this has worked- I've been uploading at a continuous rate of 50-60 kb/s all day whcih has never happened previously in this location.
