A friend asked me to try to fix a problem he had. He has a PAL dvd of an audience-shot REO show. After using IFOedit to "change" this to NTSC for him, I burned a copy in Nero Express and Nero verified it as OK.

I try to play this in my stand-alone Sony and it will totally freeze evry couple of minutes but then resume playback by itself if left alone only to freeze again a minute or so later. It will continue to do this all through-out the dvd. I burned a 2nd copy just in case it was bad media only to have the same result.

I have never had a problem with playback on my Sony for any other dvd's I "changed" from PAL to NTSC using IFOedit so I don't suspect that is the problem.

Does anyone have a clue what might be happening here? Is it just a crappy source dvd? The source dvd my friend gave me is a dvd-r, he couldn't play it because it's PAL so I told him I should be able to "change" it to NTSC.

i've had this happen on SVCD discs i burned years ago, but never on a DVD...so i got no clue...but i'd be interested to hear an explanation as well, since you've done the PAL>NTSC trick before and never had a problem

i'll see if i can't dig any info on this up online

i had this issue - was really strange. Different brands of disks were freezing differently.

..long story short - it was my "generic" DVD burner.

bought a new Sony DVD Burner ($65) and now everything plays great on the Sony DVD player. (lets call this "an engineering feature")

Thanks, but I don't think that's my problem. I have a 3 month old Lite-On burner and everything other dvd I have burned (possibly 200) all have played fine on the same Sony that has a problem with this one so I doubt I have a conflict between burner and player.

What I haven't tried yet is to see how my pc' plays the source dvd that I copied from to see if that also freezes. :duh:
