I need a new home DVD player. NTSC. It will also be my default home stereo cd player. I just want one disk, not a multi-changer, and for god's sake it must be quiet and of course play all formats (+/-/dual-layer). Does anybody have a specific recommendation?????????????

if you want it to play all formats, then go to Walmart or similar and get one of those $40 no-name brands [Apex, Norcent, GoVideo, etc]

actually that model will only play DVD-R/W, and not DVD+R/W...

in addition, many players will only play DVD-Video discs and not "data discs"--i.e. DVDs burned as DVD-ROM (ISO) or DVD-ROM (UDF)...then there's the whole NTSC or PAL, but not both...as for this particular model, i'm not sure about the last two "issues"...just thought i'd throw it out there ;)

here's the specs:

ah, missed that salient point from the OP. Although to my knowledge, most modern dvd players handle DVD-rom discs easily. That is why most "bitsetting" DVD burner firnmwares allow you to set it to be DVDrom equivelent .

Here's me, preparing to be wrong---> :disbelief

I myself use the wondeful OPPO dvd player which seems to be able to play anything short of a tin can lid! :D

I bought a Phillips DVP-642 for my gf a few months ago and we've been very pleased with it. plays NTSC/PAL DVD as well as DiVX/XviD .AVI files burned to a Data DVD or CD. got it for around $60 at WalMart.

the Phillips can be picky as far as divx playback. I too own one, but was disappointed overall with it, as many of the files I had would not play correctly.
There are plenty of threads on this player on various video forums . For other than divx playback, it is a decent unit for the $$
