there are jumpers to set, most likely the existing CD was set to cable select and this drive should be also, alternatively one is a slave and the other master. Your jumper settings may be different than the picture but are labeled.

so the one connected to the middle part of the ide cable be put to slave on the jumper and the one on the end of the ide be put to master?

Yeah, that sounds about right...been awhile since I dealt with IDE and multiple drives, let alone a CDR and DVD drive. Does your new drive burn CD and DVD? Why not just ditch the "old" CDRW?

Anyways...when you start your computer up, check the BIOS to make sure that both drives are being recognized too.

If you set the jumpers for slave and master it doesn't matter which connector, end or middle. But if you set jumpers for cable select then in most cases the middle is the master and the end is slave.
