.avi - .mpeg splitter

Does anyone know of a free program for copying and saving parts of avi and/or mpeg files. I have some large (600-700MB) files that I need to copy a small portion of to send in emails.

should be plenty of options there...i've never had to do this so i can't give any specific progs...i *think* the prog VirtualDub can do this, but its been a long time since i've used it
