Here's a text file on the subject I saved from somewhere, sometime:

"How do i make an Avatar move?

Are you familiar at all with Adobe Photoshop/Image Ready?
If so you can use PS to create a multi-layered .psd then jump over to IR to set the frame rate and optimize it for web and save it as an animated .gif.
It's EZ if you have access and are familiar with the app."

HTH.

I presume it's Image Ready. When Photoshop CS mysteriously appeared in my Applications folder, it was included along with the main app ;) .

This page (http://www.tips-tricks.com/k_gifanimation.asp) might be worth looking at as well.

EDIT: Most of those links are actually dead but this (http://www.mac.org/graphics/gifbuilder/) looks promising.

Damn, too late to edit above post

The link to GifBuilder above is to a Classic version but there is a Carbon build available fromhere (http://www.tucows.com/preview/206447). It unstuffs to a file with a Toast image icon but you need to cntrl-click and opt to open it with DiskImageMounter.
