View Full Version : Too many seeders dilutes share ratio?

Is this possible? I'm on a torrent righ now with 43 seeders and 6 leechers. Will I ever share as much as I've downloaded with so many seeders?

You're right. The more seeders there are, the less you have to share.

So...seed as much as you can. Seeders will start to drop off and as long as you stick around as long as you can...you're ratio will creep up.

If a torrent is that well seeded you shouldn't feel guilty for dropping off to use your bandwidth for other things. If you are concerned about your ratio you can wait until the torrent gets older and help out the last stragglers finish as Mamba alluded to.

I find that to be a huge problem for myself at Oink.

Also, we don't judge you for your share ratio here at TTD!

I agree... drop off and return a bit later to rescue latecomers. also, when the torrent getting to the point where its pretty inactive you can pop open a window even tho there's no leechers yet and post in the thread that you are reseeding for anybody who missed it the first time around.

or when you ask for a window to be open... or post in gd.. just about to everyone but a mod. If it didn't matter mine would be crappy. ;)

you have to have a good share ratio. I don't think you would work out there.

i thought this too, however, i found that if you expand your storage you can keep shows available longer. i keep popular bands such as nirvana, lz,etc, in compressed format, then wait for reseed opp.

Jeeeez, ratio is not what it is all about ain't it ?

The more seeders, the more music.

It is nice to try to give back as much and more than you take but for music's sake, not for number's ;)

you say ratio isn't important, than I think that we shouldn't be able to see what others have for an d/u ratio, only mods and I should see what my ratio is, it would stop some of the eliteist bitching about someones ratio being below 1, and in the short time I've been here I've seen lots of it :disbelief

some of us don't have massive hard drives to store 50 shows on.
I have a micro 12 gig hd with 8 gig free for downloading(current free space is 1.5 gig) so if I want to download something I have to make room. I do my best to get every show I dowloaded to at least a ratio of 1 before I stop seeding, even then I'll try to finish off a peer if there are no seeds other than myself, but someone else comes on to download the show and the old peer that should have started seeding removes them self from the pool :disbelief leaving me in the position of stranding a peer if I want to download something else.

I'd rather see a limit on downloads(1 per day?) when a users ratio drops below 1 and (1 per week?)when a users ratio drops below .5 you'd have to give the user a week to improve there ratio before a download restriction

Hey LastStarFighter (great movie!),

I just posted an announcement about this site going to a passkey system next week. One of the reasons I want to do so is so I may eventually set limits on those with low ratios (like you suggested).

Upload to 1:1 ratio and usps for the rest of the shows....what's wrong with that? :) People just want shows easily and bitch about their low ratios...they make me sick that they can't even upload the amount that they download...there is no excuse for that...it makes the site worse off as a whole to allow those people to stay...just my opinion
Stop the abuse! Ban them, imo

LastStarfighter

banning is a bit harsh, I'd rather see incentives for a leach to become a peer or seeder but if all else fails ban the fkr :lol
have to remember that not everyone has broadband :hmm: why? :disbelief
which makes seeding a bit harder.
we are all fans of music... [group hug]
another thing to keep in mind is that a big leach could end up giving back 10x what he takes, if he feels welcome.
even if he doesn't have a clue how to do torrents :lol

Yea, its really annoying at OiNK. One of the reasons I have an account there but I dont download much.

Its great that ratio isnt a problem here. People wont have to think "can I seed this back?" after they download something, they just download it. And 95% of the time they will seed atleast 1.0 anyway. No ratio rules greatly helps.

But dude, congrats on the 6TB of seeding thing. Thats amazing!

But people, even though there arnt any requirements, be sure to atleast try to seed back to 1.0!

How do you get an invitation to join Oink??

You'll need to know someone from it that has more then 10GB uploaded so they get invites. Or I think they have an IRC channel to ask for invites.

In my opinion, the no ratio requirement rule is great because people wont be scared to download because their ratio might go down. But this only works if people accually try to keep a 1.0 ratio.

The rule should be to help people with torrents they cant seed back much on (maybe there are 100 seeders and no leechers), but it shouldent help the people who just dont care about ratio and just download.

In my opinion, after a month of being a member you should have a 0.5 ratio requirement. Anything below that and you can only downlaod 1 torrent a week. If you make the requirement 1.0, this site will be kinda like OiNK's Pink Palace. Not everyone can have a ratio of over 1.0. Its just not practical. But it should be what everyone aims for, and if they are a little less its ok.

I've been seeding 5 shows most of the weekend, and right now there are no other seeds, not a big deal, (I am trying to get my ratio to 2, the way I'm looking at it is that someone more or less sent me a show of a band I like for free...sweet!! now I'm helping 2 other users like me, get that same show)
but I won't be seeding them for much longer because it's taking up all my free space on my hd.(I need more room to get new shows)

I think that the target should be for all users to give back more than they take,
some will reach that target with room to spare and some will be short....that's life.

Just for the record everyone, if you ever cant find something to seed then there are many concert DVDs that could use someone downloading them then seeding them more.

I agree with sometype of quota on how low the ratio can go.

The right thing would be at 1 to 1. I mean the whole basis of this community is built on sharing

Just my opinion

Oh if anyone has an extra oink invite I'd be very grateful
