Are there compatability issues?

I want to send a friend of mine in the UK a DVD, but I would hate to send it to her only for it not to work in her player.

So are there compatibility issues, or is that only for manufactured official DVDs and not boots?

If it's a fan made DVD, then you don't have to worry about the region issues. However, you will always have to worry about PAL vs NTSC issues. I know that here in the states, you can buy a cheap DVD player (like an Apex) and it will play both PAL and NTSC, but I have no idea what it is like over in Europe.

PAL is what they have in Europe, right? How would I go about converting NTSC to PAL? Is that possible anyway?

I'm not a very technical person...

Also, I bought damn DVD - R's and I cant seem to find software that burns minus rs....if someone could point me to some (even a trial version)

Burning software is the same for DVD-Rs and for DVD+Rs. However, some computers will only burn DVD-Rs or DVD+Rs (my iMac only burns DVD-Rs but will play both).

And yes, Europe mostly plays PAL. If you take a look over at videohelp.com, they will have some apps for converting from NTSC to PAL.

Most people in Europe are able to play NTSC and PAL discs, so you may not even have to convert your DVD...

I guess I'll try sending it to her and crossing my fingers. Its sortof a surprise, so yeah, I dont think I'll try asking her technical questions that she probably doesnt know the answer to.

And a DVD Rom should play both anyway, right? So she can watch it on her computer if all else fails.

But my DVD burner says right on it DVD + RW.

Shit. LOL.

PAL & NTSC isn't so much of a problem as is the codex required. Try your disc in a stand-alone player and see if it works ok. I've had a few where the DVD player did not pick it up at all or only played the audio.

ditto

Don't convert your DVD, there's only a litle chance that it won't play on her DVD player...

Actually it's been that way over here "long" (several months, maye a year) before you got to enjoy the same situation in the states.
