Make some new banners for TTD

I'm ready to start a new 'style' on here that has a rotating banner. And, these banners are going to be made by YOU! I'm linking to a psd file that contains three layers - the gray background, the media picture, and the text. I'd like you to keep the background and text when you make your own banner, but the media picture is optional. After you make your banner, make sure to do a Save For Web so the file size is smaller. And then, when you are done, mail them to ttdbanners@<hidden> (I won't be checking this everyday, so please be patient in waiting for your banner to show up).

I think it should go without saying that I want you to keep these nice. No making derogatory banners of other users or bands or banners that can be considered offensive, derogatory, or not work safe because I just won't include them in the rotation.

Actually I just downloaded this and is only 651 KB.

Also for those of you who don't know or just prefer to use open software, Adobe Photoshop (PSD) files may also be opened and edited in The Gimp (http://www.gimp.org), so everyone can get involved not just Mac and Win users running Photoshop.

The font should be 'flattened' as a layer. You should have it as a layer and not be able to play with it as a text layer. It worked that way for me, anyway. Is it asking you for a font to use?

I would like to challenge someone to make a nice banner including pics of famous faces like like:

YMSB
Miles Davis
too many to mention, but check out my list at etree.org/Chachi420 and I think that those bands should be photoshopped into one banner called "jambands banner". Also, for this to work, people should be able to choose which banner they want. I didn't like the idea of the banner rotating to a style I don't like.

And I tried to get that GIMP but couldn't figure out how to download it. Mirror problems. But then again, I didn't try too hard to figure it out either. Already grabbed me a copy of CS2.

I've used Gimp once or twice and personally I think it is a replacement for MS paint, and not Photoshop AT ALL.
The problem is that I'm running a Windows binary under Wine (remember, Linux user here), and for some odd reason Photoshop won't minimize properly and I'll be stuck with those palettes over my other windows, which makes it unpleasant to try and use other programs while Photoshop is open (but it does come in handy when I've done a render in Apophysis and I'm trying to remember what background color I chose and input that into Photoshop). So I only use Photoshop when I'm going to be sticking around in that window for a while working on nothing but that picture. If I'm putting in one picture, then going back to my web browser to find something to fit the space, then going back to my image editor, it makes more sense to use an image editor that isn't going to block the sides of the screen.

If you'd like, I'll take some screenies to show what the problem is.

Oh, and GIMP is a whole lot more powerful than Paint (I had to use Paint for my Organic Chemistry projects, so I know what it can and can't do). Actually, GIMP has some filter options that Photoshop doesn't (or at least filters 7.0 doesn't have--can't speak for CS and CS2). Some tasks are a bit more painful to do in GIMP, but GIMP can do a vast majority of what Photoshop can do.

I just sent an e-mail with the final, definitive version of my SFA banner. No images of yetis in this one because the "wooks" had a field day with the first version of the banner, and the second version wouldn't be any better. Besides, the color balance is so much nicer on this one.

I think it's pretty good despite the fact that it losses some colour and quality due to compression. And the Outseed needs to be more a tiny bit more to the right. Might fix it this weekend if I'm feeling spunky.

I don't have photoshop open right now, but don't you just click the little lock on the side where all the layers are listed?

Yep.
View the layer by using the 'eye' icon just to the left of the layer.
Lock/unlock by clicking the tiny 'lock' icon on the right.

Though for some pictures I sometimes have to do it a couple of times until I have the right layer selected.

Either is fine, though you'll usually get a better compression configuration with gifs, and an even better one with png. But of course that shouldn't matter with banners of this size, but if you're seeing weird compression artifacts then level up from jpg to gif to png.

As a rule, the JPEG format should be used on photographic images, and images which do not look as good with only 256 colors. GIF files should be used for logos, line drawings, animations, and icons. Avoid using it for photographic images, and graphics which have long stretches of continuous-tone in them. When you're designing GIF files, avoid using gradients and turn off anti-aliasing where possible to minimize the file size. Now PNG was developed to surpass the limitations of GIFs, and as a means by which developers can avoid having to worry about the patent licenses associated with other formats. PNG was designed to offer the main features of the GIF format, including streaming and progressive file formats. It also provides greater depth of color, catering to images up to 24 bit in color.

It's expected that support for PNG will be widespread in the near future, although it will never completely replace GIF, as it doesn't support animation.



But I may be wrong. :)

Is TTD still taking new banners? I submitted a couple during the last weeks but haven't seem them on the site yet. Guess I'm just too impatient, but then again the original call for new banners was from august last year. :hmm:
